Essay by Katherine Spriggs (exercise p. 100)

  1. It's clear that this is a topic that matter to Katherine Spriggs. Has she convinced you that is matters-and if so, how? How does Spriggs establish the importance of her topic? Of course that is clear that the topic matter to Katherine Spriggs. She proves or demonstrates the importance of her topic doing emphasis in that buying local the product will be fresh with better taste because of that, in that way we contribute or will bring advantages to the environment, will reduce the oil and energy use and will improve the opening in new job for the local residents, that is some point convenient but the only thing that do not convince me is the point of have enough production and variety as we have with large farms and industrial production
  2. What a counterarguments or positions other than her own does Spriggs consider-and how does she respond in each case? A counter argument that she consider is the one that support of the purchase of the products where they grow best and the other position she state is that buying locally is harmful for the enviroment because the small farers are not that efficient as the large ones, that know and use better technology, so then small farmers use to be polycultures, they used to grow, corn, hey, alfalfa, and oats, they also had milking cattle, chickens, and a few porks, or pigs; In contrast the big or large farmer are monocultures, they are specialists in one product like a chickens, or pigs, meat production, or corn, vegetables, citrus, etc.
  3. Choose a section of Spriggs' essay that you find especially effective or ineffective. Referring to the gender features discussed on p. 66, describe what makes this part of her argument persuasive or not. The essay last part for me is repeating the same point again and again and for me is no clear what is the principal point to her, to buy local is assume because the titulo but start with the ambient pollution, the grown locals productos or live green.
  4. Spriggs includes several photos in her essay. How do they contribute to her argument? For me is showing how the products are transported for all the country, one small polyculture farm and one big monoculture farm, but this is no showing any thing that help to her in her argument to convince the lector.
